The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.

A Sisterly Duo

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
